Social Kettering was created in order to spread awareness of student and child safety using online applications and social media sites. Students should be aware of all the dangers that come along with being active online. Things like cyber bullying, threatening messages, not reaching out to someone, and unwanted sexual solicitation.
- Cyber Bullying: The use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature. People bullied online are often bullied in person. Cell phones and computers themselves shouldn't be blamed for cyber bullying.
- Threatening Messages: Tending or intended to menace: causing alarm, as by being imminent; ominous; sinister. To be a menace or source of danger to: Sickness threatening peace of mind. To offer (a punishment, injury, etc.) by way of a threat.
- Unwanted Sexual Solicitation: Receiving or unwillingly viewing images of pornography from either people they know or even online predators. 1 in 5 teenagers receive these unwanted messages or images.
- Reaching Out: More than half of teens surveyed, don't alert adults about their issues in fear of judgement or punishment from their actions. Though in the long run, bringing someones attention to their issues or to at least lessen the harassment from others; would be safer in the end.
